GATE 2027 Photograph Requirements
Use a clear colour passport-size photograph with a plain white background. Before uploading, check that:
- The photograph is in JPG/JPEG format.
- The file size is between 5 KB and 600 KB.
- The resolution is between 200 × 260 and 530 × 690 pixels.
- The photograph is 3.5 × 4.5 cm.
- Your face covers approximately 60–70% of the photograph.
- You are looking directly at the camera.
- Your forehead, eyes, nose and chin are clearly visible.
- The background is plain white with no other person or object.
- The photograph is clear and free from shadows.
- Caps, hats, sunglasses and coloured glasses should not cover the face.
- Normal vision-correction spectacles are allowed, but glare on the lenses is not acceptable.
- Religious head coverings are permitted only when the required facial features remain clearly visible.
The photograph submitted during the application is also used on the GATE admit card and scorecard. If you'd rather work on it on its own, the photograph-only GATE tool applies the same crop and size checks separately from the signature.
GATE 2027 Signature Requirements
The GATE signature has an important requirement that is easy to miss: the image must follow a specific aspect ratio, not just a particular file size. Your signature should:
- Be in JPG/JPEG format.
- Be between 3 KB and 300 KB.
- Have a resolution between 250 × 80 and 580 × 180 pixels.
- Have a height-to-width ratio of 1:2.75 to 1:3.75.
- Occupy approximately 70–80% of the cropped image.
- Be written in black or dark blue ink.
- Be your own signature.
- Be clear and fully visible after cropping.
What does the GATE signature aspect ratio mean?
The signature image should be much wider than it is tall. For example, a 500 × 150 px image has a width-to-height ratio of about 3.33, which falls within the official 2.75–3.75 range.
This is only a practical example, not a mandatory GATE output size. Your final dimensions can vary as long as they remain within the official pixel and aspect-ratio limits. If you'd like to prepare it separately, the signature-only GATE tool keeps the same ratio checks in one place.

Common GATE Photo & Signature Upload Problems
| Problem | How to Fix It |
|---|---|
| Photo is too large | Compress the JPG/JPEG while keeping the image clear. |
| Photo is below 5 KB | Start with a better-quality original instead of using excessive compression. |
| Face appears too small | Re-crop the photograph so the face covers approximately 60–70%. |
| Background is unsuitable | Use a plain white background without people or objects. |
| Glare appears on spectacles | Retake the photograph without glare or remove spectacles if necessary. |
| Photo is blurred | Use a clear original photograph rather than repeatedly compressing a poor-quality file. |
| Signature is too narrow or too tall | Re-crop the signature to the required 1:2.75–1:3.75 aspect ratio. |
| Signature occupies too little space | Remove excess blank margins so the signature covers approximately 70–80% of the image. |
| Signature is rejected | Check the dimensions, aspect ratio, file size, format and ink colour. |
| Wrong file format | Save the final image as JPG/JPEG. |
IIT Madras also provides examples of unacceptable photographs and signatures, including blurred photos, glare, unsuitable backgrounds, covered faces and improperly prepared signatures. If a file is still oversized after a first pass, run it through our general-purpose compressor; to double-check the dimensions and ratio before uploading, run it through our dedicated size-checking tool.
GATE 2027 Live Photo During Registration
The uploaded photograph and the live-photo step are separate.
According to the official GATE 2027 required-documents instructions, a live photograph may be captured during registration. Candidates should therefore be prepared to use a computer with a webcam or a phone with a 5 MP camera if the live-photo step is presented during registration.
This resizer prepares your photograph file for upload. It does not replace the live-photo capture inside the GATE application.
Documents to Keep Ready for GATE 2027
Apart from your photograph and signature, keep the following information or documents ready as applicable:
- A valid photo identity document
- SC/ST certificate, if applicable
- PwD certificate, if applicable
- Dyslexia certificate, if applicable
- Other documents specifically required for your category or application
For GATE 2027, DigiLocker registration is mandatory for Indian nationals, and information such as name, date of birth, mobile number, email ID, profile picture, address and verified ID details is fetched through DigiLocker.
You do not need to upload your 10th, 12th, UG or PG marksheets in DigiLocker specifically for GATE 2027 registration.
