India Post GDS Photo Size 2026

The recommended GDS photograph specifications are:

• Dimensions: 320 × 400 pixels
• Aspect ratio: 4:5
• File size: 30–100 KB
• DPI: 72–150
• Format: JPG/JPEG
• Background: Plain white or light-coloured
• Face coverage: Approximately 70–80% of the image

The 4:5 ratio means the photograph is taller than it is wide. For example, 320 × 400 pixels follows the required 4:5 proportion.

The photograph should be recent, clear, well-lit and in focus. The face should be centred and clearly visible without shadows or red-eye.

The 2026 GDS instructions also specify that scanned photographs and selfies should not be uploaded.

The recommended GDS signature specifications are:

The 5:2 ratio makes the signature image considerably wider than it is tall. For example, 300 × 120 pixels follows the recommended 5:2 proportion.

The signature should be written clearly on white paper and captured or scanned without shadows, excessive empty space or distortion.

What Does the GDS Photo Aspect Ratio 4:5 Mean?

A 4:5 aspect ratio means that for every 4 units of width, the image has 5 units of height. For example, 320 × 400 pixels has a 4:5 ratio.

If your original photograph has a different shape, crop it to 4:5 before resizing. This helps preserve the natural proportions of the photograph and prevents the face from appearing stretched.

What Does the GDS Signature Aspect Ratio 5:2 Mean?

A 5:2 aspect ratio means the signature should be much wider than it is tall. The recommended 300 × 120 pixel size follows this ratio.

Tips for Capturing a Clear GDS Photo and Signature

Getting the dimensions and file size right is only part of the process. A clear source photograph and signature make the final files easier to prepare correctly.

For the Photograph

• Take a recent photograph. Avoid photographing an old printed photograph because glare, reflections and loss of detail can make the final image unclear.
• Use a plain white or light-coloured background. This helps keep the face clearly visible against the background.

"Signature file size must be between 20 KB and 100 KB"

Check the size of your signature file. If it is below 20 KB or above 100 KB, adjust the image quality or compression and save it again.

"Invalid aspect ratio"

Your image proportions do not match the expected shape. Crop the photograph to 4:5 or the signature to 5:2 before resizing.

"Invalid image dimensions"

Check the final pixel dimensions. The recommended dimensions are 320 × 400 pixels for the photograph and 300 × 120 pixels for the signature.
