Note

NTA's application instructions may not provide one fixed pixel value for every image requirement. Avoid using pixel dimensions from another exam unless your current JEE Main application instructions specifically mention them.

JEE Main Photo Requirements

Your JEE Main photograph should meet the required conditions before uploading.

  • JPG or JPEG format.
  • File size between 10 KB and 200 KB.
  • Recent passport-size colour photograph.
  • Clear and properly visible face.
  • White or light-coloured background.
  • Proper lighting.
  • Around 80% of the face visible, including both ears.
  • No mask covering the face.
  • Photograph should be clear and identifiable.
  • Use your own photograph.

NTA may also require a live photograph during the application process. The uploaded photograph and the live-photo step are separate requirements.

Prepare Your JEE Main Photo

Start with a clear original photograph instead of repeatedly compressing an already small image.

For better results:

  • Crop unnecessary background while keeping your face properly framed.
  • Maintain the 3.5 × 4.5 cm portrait proportion.
  • Keep the background clean and evenly lit.
  • Use a plain white background where possible.
  • Avoid heavily edited or filtered photographs.
  • If you wear spectacles, make sure there is no glare or reflection covering your eyes.
  • Keep your face and both ears clearly visible.
  • Resize and compress the final image to 10–200 KB.
  • Preview the final JPG/JPEG image before downloading.

Avoid repeatedly compressing the same image, as this can gradually reduce image quality and make the photograph blurry. When a file is only slightly oversized, an image compressor can bring it into range in a single step.

JEE Main Signature Requirements

The signature is uploaded separately from the photograph.

  • Dimensions: 3.5 × 1.5 cm
  • File size: 10–100 KB
  • Format: JPG/JPEG
  • Use a clear handwritten signature.
  • Sign on clean white paper.
  • Keep unnecessary blank space to a minimum.
  • Make sure the final signature remains readable after resizing.

Use your normal signature consistently. Avoid creating an unusually different or overly stylised signature only for the application.

If you want to prepare your signature separately, use the JEE Main Signature Resizer with the appropriate crop and file-size settings.

JEE Main Live Photograph

The uploaded photograph is different from the live photograph captured during the application process.

NTA's application process may require candidates to upload a photograph and also complete a live-photo capture step while filling out the form. Depending on the available options, the live photograph can be captured using a device camera or webcam.

For the live-photo step:

  • Use proper lighting.
  • Keep a light-coloured background.
  • Face the camera directly.
  • Keep your face clearly visible.
  • Make sure both ears are visible where required.
  • Do not cover your face with a mask.
  • Make sure no other person appears in the frame.

Preparing the JPG photograph does not replace the live-photo capture requirement.

JEE Main Documents Required for Application

Photo and signature are only part of the documents required for the JEE Main application.

DocumentFormatFile Size
PhotographJPG / JPEG10–200 KB
SignatureJPG / JPEG10–100 KB
Class 10 Certificate / MarksheetPDF50–300 KB
Identity Proof*JPG / JPEG10–200 KB
Disability / UDID Certificate**PDF50–300 KB

* Identity proof is required for candidates who verify their identity through methods other than Aadhaar or DigiLocker.

** Disability/UDID documentation applies to candidates for whom it is applicable. NTA states that candidates without a UDID card may need to upload the disability certificate in the prescribed format.

Not every candidate will need every document. Prepare the documents applicable to your situation before starting the application.

Common JEE Main Photo & Signature Upload Problems

ProblemWhat to Check
Photo is rejectedCheck the 10–200 KB limit, JPG/JPEG format, background and face visibility.
Photo looks blurryStart with a clearer original instead of repeatedly compressing the same file.
Face is too small in the photoRe-crop the original while keeping your face properly visible.
Glasses cause glareRetake the photograph with better lighting so your eyes remain clearly visible.
Signature is rejectedCheck the 3.5 × 1.5 cm dimensions and 10–100 KB range.
Signature becomes unclearUse a better scan and avoid excessive compression.
File is too largeCompress the image gradually until it falls within the required range.
Wrong file selectedOpen and check the final image before uploading it.
Live photo is not capturingCheck camera permissions, lighting and the camera selected by your browser.

If you're unsure whether your file already meets the requirements, run it through our Exam Photo Checker before uploading.

Why Can a JEE Main Photo Be Rejected?

Correct file size alone does not guarantee that a photograph will be accepted. Check the following points if your image is rejected or does not upload correctly:

  • The file is outside the required 10–200 KB range.
  • The image is not in JPG/JPEG format.
  • The background is unsuitable or poorly lit.
  • The face is not clearly visible.
  • Both ears are not visible where required.
  • The photograph is blurry.
  • Glare or reflection covers the eyes.
  • A mask covers the face.
  • The wrong photograph has been selected.

Use a clear original image and check the final file before uploading it to the application form.

Before You Submit Your JEE Main Application

Use this final checklist before completing your application:

  • Photograph is in JPG/JPEG format.
  • Photo is between 10 KB and 200 KB.
  • Photo follows the required 3.5 × 4.5 cm format.
  • Face and both ears are clearly visible.
  • Signature is in JPG/JPEG format.
  • Signature is between 10 KB and 100 KB.
  • Signature follows the required 3.5 × 1.5 cm format.
  • Class 10 certificate/marksheet is ready in PDF format.
  • Applicable identity or disability documents are ready.
  • Live photograph can be captured successfully.
  • Application preview shows the correct files.
  • Confirmation page is saved after successful submission.

Keep Your JEE Main Application Records

After submitting your application, save the confirmation page or application record along with the photograph and signature you used.

If you apply for another JEE Main session, keeping each submission's records separately can help you identify the correct application and files later — this is especially useful when you appear in more than one session and need to refer back to an earlier submission.
