Important

Reported signature file-size limits for NEET UG vary across different years and sources — figures as low as 4–30 KB and as high as 10–100 KB have both appeared in official-looking guidance. Rather than guess, check the exact figure in this year's NEET UG information bulletin before uploading, and treat any number you see elsewhere (including here) as a starting point, not a guarantee.

NEET Passport Photo Requirements

Your uploaded NEET passport photograph should meet these basic requirements:

  • Recent colour passport-size photograph, taken on or after the date specified in the current bulletin.
  • JPG or JPEG format.
  • File size between 10 KB and 200 KB.
  • Plain white background.
  • About 80% of the face visible, including both ears.
  • No mask, cap or head covering (except for religious headwear that doesn't cover the face).
  • Neutral expression, looking directly at the camera.
  • Photograph should be clear and properly exposed.
  • Name of the candidate and the date the photograph was taken, printed at the bottom — some cycles have treated this as mandatory, others as recommended, so follow the current bulletin's instruction on this.

NTA also captures a live photograph during the application process, so your uploaded photograph should clearly represent your current appearance.

How to Prepare Your NEET Passport Photo

  1. 1

    Start with a clear original

Use a clear original photograph rather than an already compressed image.

  2. 2

    Crop to the required ratio

Crop the photo to the 2.5 × 3.5 inch portrait ratio. Our Crop Image Tool can remove distracting background before you resize.

  3. 3

    Centre the face

Keep the face properly centred and both ears visible.

  4. 4

    Check the background

Make sure the background is white and free from distracting objects.

  5. 5

    Adjust the file size

Resize and compress the image until it falls between 10 KB and 200 KB.

  6. 6

    Review the final file

Open the final file once and check that the face is still sharp.

  7. 7

    Keep it ready

Keep the final JPG/JPEG ready before starting your application.

NEET Postcard Photo Requirements

The postcard-size photo is uploaded separately and is also used for exam-day identity verification.

  • Dimensions: 4 × 6 inches.
  • File size between 10 KB and 200 KB.
  • Should be from the same photo session as your passport photo, so both images match.
  • Same background, lighting and appearance requirements as the passport photo.

NEET Signature & Thumb Impression Requirements

The NEET application also requires a scanned signature and a left-hand thumb impression, uploaded separately from the photographs.

  • Format: JPG/JPEG for both.
  • Sign clearly on plain white paper with a blue or black ink pen.
  • Signature should be legible and match your normal handwriting — not typed or in block capitals.
  • Thumb impression should be clear, with the full print visible, taken on plain white paper.
  • File-size limits vary by application cycle — confirm the exact KB range in the current bulletin before uploading.

You can prepare the signature on its own with the NEET Signature Resizer, which handles the same crop and compression settings separately from the photographs.

How to Prepare Your NEET Signature and Thumb Impression

  1. 1

    Sign on white paper

Sign clearly on clean white paper.

  2. 2

    Scan or photograph it

Scan or photograph the signature in good lighting.

  3. 3

    Crop the white space

    Crop the unnecessary white space.

  4. 4

    Adjust the file size

Resize and compress to the file-size range specified in the current bulletin.

  5. 5

    Prepare the thumb impression

Ink your left thumb and press firmly onto plain white paper, then scan or photograph it.

  6. 6

    Preview before downloading

Preview both final images before downloading.

NEET Also Requires a Live Photograph

The uploaded photographs and the live photograph are two different steps in the NEET application.

You first prepare and upload your scanned passport and postcard photographs. During the application process, NTA also captures a live photograph using your device's webcam. If your computer does not have a webcam, NTA provides a QR-code option to complete this step using a mobile device.

Before starting the live-photo step:

  • Keep your camera or webcam working.
  • Sit directly in front of the camera.
  • Use proper lighting.
  • Keep a plain, light-coloured background.
  • Keep around 80% of your face visible, including both ears.
  • Do not cover your face with a mask.

This means preparing your photo files does not replace the live-photo step.

NEET Documents Required for Application

Photo, postcard photo, signature and thumb impression are not the only files that may be required during the NEET application.

Common NEET Photo, Signature & Thumb Impression Upload Problems

ProblemWhat to Check
Photo is rejectedCheck the 10–200 KB limit, JPG/JPEG format, white background and face visibility.
Postcard photo doesn't match passport photoUse the same photo session and appearance for both.
Photo looks too small or croppedRe-crop the original while keeping the full face and both ears visible.
Photo is blurryStart with a clearer original instead of repeatedly compressing the same file.
Signature is rejectedCheck the current bulletin's exact KB range and confirm it's handwritten, not typed.
Thumb impression unclearRe-ink and press firmly, avoid smudging, ensure good lighting when scanning.
File is too largeCompress the image gradually rather than reducing quality too aggressively.
Wrong file uploadedOpen each final file before selecting it in the application form.
Live photo is not capturingCheck camera permissions, lighting, or use the QR-code mobile option if no webcam is available.

If a correctly prepared file is still above the allowed limit, run it through our Image Compressor to bring it into range.

Why Your NEET Photo Can Be Rejected

Getting the file size right is only part of the process. A photo can still cause problems if:

  • The background is unsuitable.
  • The face is not clearly visible or less than 80% of the frame.
  • Both ears are not visible.
  • The image is blurry or poorly lit.
  • The file is not JPG/JPEG.
  • The file is outside the required KB range.
  • The postcard and passport photos don't visibly match.

NTA states that candidates must upload their own photograph, signature, thumb impression and certificates correctly.
