SBI Clerk Image Requirements
| Document | Format | Dimensions | File size |
|---|---|---|---|
| Photograph | JPG/JPEG | 200 × 230 px preferred | 20–50 KB |
| Signature | JPG/JPEG | 140 × 60 px preferred | 10–20 KB |
| Left-hand thumb impression | JPG/JPEG | 240 × 240 px | 20–50 KB |
| Handwritten declaration | JPG/JPEG | 800 × 400 px | 50–100 KB |
SBI's application instructions specify the above dimensions and file-size ranges for the four image uploads. The photograph and signature dimensions are listed as preferred sizes, while the thumb impression and declaration also have specified quality requirements.

Prepare These Four Files Before Applying
Instead of stopping midway through registration to edit an image, prepare your upload files first.
1. Photograph
Use a recent passport-style colour photograph with a light-coloured, preferably white background.
Target: 200 × 230 px preferred · 20–50 KB · JPG/JPEG
Keep your face clearly visible and look directly at the camera. Avoid caps, hats and dark glasses. Religious headwear is permitted when it does not cover the face.
2. Signature
Sign on plain white paper using a black ink pen and scan the signature clearly.
Target: 140 × 60 px preferred · 10–20 KB · JPG/JPEG
Your signature must be clearly visible and must not be written in CAPITAL LETTERS. SBI specifically states that signatures in capital letters will not be accepted.
3. Left-Hand Thumb Impression
Create a clear left-hand thumb impression on white paper using black or blue ink.
Target: 240 × 240 px · 20–50 KB · JPG/JPEG
SBI specifies 240 × 240 pixels at 200 DPI as the preferred quality for the thumb impression. If you do not have a left thumb, follow the alternative procedure specified in the current SBI notification applicable to your recruitment.
4. Handwritten Declaration
Write the required declaration yourself in English on white paper using black ink.
Target: 800 × 400 px · 50–100 KB · JPG/JPEG
The declaration must be in the candidate's own handwriting and must not be written in CAPITAL LETTERS. Use the wording provided in the applicable SBI notification rather than creating your own version.
Your Scanned Photo Is Not the Same as the Live Photo
There can be two separate photograph steps during the SBI Clerk application.
Uploaded photograph
This is the JPG/JPEG image you prepare beforehand and upload according to the required dimensions and file-size range.
Live photograph
The application process can also require a separate photograph captured during registration using the camera/webcam or the mobile-phone process provided on the application screen.
So, preparing your 200 × 230 px photograph does not automatically complete the live-photo step.
When you reach the live-photo section, follow the instructions displayed by SBI for lighting, background, framing and camera positioning.
The SBI Clerk Signature Rule You Shouldn't Miss
Getting the KB size right isn't enough.
Your signature should:
- Be made by you.
- Be written on white paper.
- Use black ink.
- Be clearly visible.
- Use the preferred 140 × 60 px dimensions.
- Stay within the 10–20 KB range.
- Not be written in CAPITAL LETTERS.
SBI also states that a mismatch between the signature uploaded during registration and the signature used at later examination stages can lead to disqualification.
Use your normal signature rather than simply writing your name in block letters.
Scan Clearly Before You Resize
A good final image starts with a good original scan.
SBI's scanning instructions recommend:
- Minimum 200 DPI
- True Color
- Crop the scan close to the actual image
- Save the final file as JPG/JPEG
After scanning, use the upload editor or image tool to crop and resize the image to the required dimensions.
A blurry original cannot be fixed by repeatedly increasing compression or changing the file size.
A Simple Preparation Flow
You don't need to edit everything at once.
Photograph
Clear photo → Crop → 200 × 230 px → 20–50 KB → Preview
Signature
Clear scan → Crop → 140 × 60 px → 10–20 KB → Preview
Thumb Impression
Clear impression → Crop → 240 × 240 px → 20–50 KB → Preview
Declaration
Write clearly → Scan → Crop → 800 × 400 px → 50–100 KB → Preview
This lets you finish your image preparation before opening the application form.
When the File Looks Fine but Upload Fails
Don't check only the KB value.
Verify all of these:
- JPG/JPEG format
- Correct pixel dimensions
- Correct file-size range
- Correct document selected
- Clear image
- Proper cropping
- Correct upload field
For example, a 140 × 60 px signature that is 25 KB still does not meet the 10–20 KB signature limit. Likewise, a 12 KB signature with incorrect dimensions can still be rejected.
Dimensions and file size are separate requirements.
Fix the Original Instead of Over-Compressing
Sometimes the best solution isn't more compression.
Signature looks tiny
Crop unnecessary white margins while keeping the complete signature visible.
Signature looks blurry
Create a cleaner scan instead of repeatedly compressing the same file.
Thumb impression is smudged
Make a fresh impression on clean white paper and scan it again.
Declaration is difficult to read
Create a clearer handwritten original before resizing it.
The goal is not simply to produce the smallest possible file. The final upload should remain clear and readable within the specified limits.
Keep Original and Final Files Separate
Create a folder named SBI Clerk Application and keep the original files separate from the final upload versions.
- Original Photograph
- Final Photograph
- Original Signature
- Final Signature
- Thumb Impression
- Handwritten Declaration
- Submitted Application
- Payment Receipt
Keeping the originals means you can create another version later if a different recruitment requires different dimensions or file-size limits.
