SSC CHSL Photo & Signature Requirements

The photograph and signature are handled differently during the SSC CHSL application process.

The current SSC CHSL instructions require candidates to capture their photograph through the application module and separately upload a scanned signature in JPEG format between 10 and 20 KB. The signature image should be approximately 6.0 cm wide × 2.0 cm high.

SSC CHSL Live Photo: What You Need to Know

The current CHSL application does not require candidates to upload a pre-existing photograph. Instead, the application module captures the photograph while you are completing the form.

When the live photo step appears:

• Choose a place with good lighting.
• Use a plain background.
• Keep the camera at eye level.
• Sit or stand directly in front of the camera.
• Look straight ahead.
• Keep your complete face inside the indicated area.
• Do not wear a cap, mask, or glasses/spectacles.
• Make sure the photograph is clear before continuing.

If the captured photograph does not meet the displayed requirements, recapture it rather than trying to upload an older photograph. SSC also specifically states that candidates should not capture a photograph of an existing photograph.

Prepare Your CHSL Signature

Prepare a clear digital copy of your handwritten signature before resizing it. The signature should remain complete and readable after cropping and compression.

Upload the signature to the tool, then:

Crop Unnecessary Space

Remove excessive white space around the handwriting while keeping the complete signature visible.

Set the Required Dimensions

Set the signature to approximately 6.0 cm × 2.0 cm, or follow the dimensions specified in the current CHSL application.

Adjust the File Size

Keep the final signature within the required 10–20 KB range without making the handwriting difficult to see.

Check the Final Image

Before downloading, check the format, dimensions, file size, cropping, and clarity. You can also confirm the exported file with the Signature Size Checker.

A clear original image will generally produce a better result than trying to recover details from a blurry or heavily compressed signature.

Before uploading your signature, check these main requirements:

• Format: JPEG/JPG
• File size: 10–20 KB
• Dimensions: About 6.0 cm × 2.0 cm
• Quality: Clear, complete, and readable

Common CHSL Signature Problems

Signature Is Above 20 KB

Reduce the file size while keeping the handwriting readable. The current CHSL requirement is 10–20 KB.

Signature Is Below 10 KB

Do not assume that a smaller file is better. If the application specifies a 10–20 KB range, keep the final file within that range.

Signature Looks Blurry

Start with a clear scan or photograph of the original signature. Resizing cannot restore details that are already missing.

Signature Becomes Too Small

Excessive blank space around the handwriting can make the actual signature appear very small after resizing. Crop the image carefully before setting the final dimensions.

Signature Dimensions Are Incorrect

Changing the file size alone does not guarantee the correct dimensions. Use the custom width and height controls when the CHSL application specifies particular dimensions.

Live Photo Is Not Accepted

If the live photograph does not meet the application instructions, recapture it with suitable lighting, a plain background, an eye-level camera, and the required facial framing.

CHSL Application Checklist

Before submitting your SSC CHSL application:

• Follow the live-photo instructions shown in the application.
• Make sure your signature is complete and clearly visible.
• Save the signature in JPEG/JPG format.
• Keep the signature within the required 10–20 KB range.
• Check the required signature dimensions.
• Preview the final signature before uploading it.
• Compare the final files with the latest SSC CHSL notification.

If you use Aadhaar Based Authentication, also read the applicable instructions in the current notification because SSC provides specific provisions concerning photograph and signature requirements.

Why Custom Size Controls Matter

File size and image dimensions are separate requirements.

Reducing an image to a particular KB size does not automatically give it the correct dimensions. Similarly, changing the width and height does not guarantee that the resulting file will fall within the required file-size range.
